Connecting the Dots

Seen from afar some stones are like a little world with their continents, islands and seas. This is how the astronauts see the planet Earth enveloped in the clouds.’

Bruno Munari

This collection is about feeding our curiosity through the exploration of materials and processes.

Nicoletta has always been very curious, often exploring nature in great detail. When near the sea, she would search for the smallest creatures, lifting rocks to see what lay beneath, picking up shells, pebbles, and objects with interesting textures, lines, symmetry, or near-perfect shapes. It was during this time that her fascination with pebbles and stones began.

Through observation she has been trying to highlight the often overlooked qualities that they hold and make them more obvious. Either through  material exploration; using glass powder and glaze in the clay mix, or through techniques such as sandblasting.

The dot, was the first quality that she has been exploring in her work. Forming dots by pressing clay on canvas and then connecting those dots together forming seemingly fragile objects. Dots of clay rolled out forming random patterns. Using slip trailing to form dots in structured repetitive lines or drawing and then sandblasting dotted patterns fired clay bodies.

This exploration has resulted in a collection of different textures, colours, shapes and patterns; a collection of contracts.
